Description

Femodene ED is a combined oral contraceptive pill containing two hormones — gestodene (a progestogen) and ethinylestradiol (an oestrogen). It prevents pregnancy by stopping ovulation, thickening cervical mucus to prevent sperm from reaching an egg, and changing the lining of the uterus to reduce the chance of implantation.

Each pack of Femodene ED contains 21 active white tablets and 7 inactive peach tablets to help maintain a regular routine. When taken correctly, Femodene ED is over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy.

Directions for Use
  • Take one tablet daily at the same time each day, with or without food.
  • Take 21 white active tablets followed by 7 peach inactive tablets (placebo).
  • After finishing a pack, start the next one immediately — do not leave any gap.
  • Withdrawal bleeding usually occurs during the 7 days of inactive tablets.

Starting Femodene ED:

  • If you start on Day 1 of your period, protection begins immediately.
  • If starting between Days 2–5, use additional contraception (e.g. condoms) for the first 7 days.

If you forget an active (white) tablet:

  • If less than 12 hours late, take it as soon as you remember and continue as usual.
  • If more than 12 hours late, take the last missed tablet immediately and continue as normal, but use extra contraception for the next 7 days.
  • If several tablets are missed, protection may be reduced — seek medical advice.

If you forget a peach (inactive) tablet:

  • Skip the missed tablet — continue as normal.

If vomiting or severe diarrhoea occurs within 3–4 hours of taking a tablet, take another as soon as possible and use extra contraception for 7 days.

After childbirth:

  • If not breastfeeding, start 21 days after delivery.
  • If breastfeeding, use an alternative method until you stop breastfeeding.

After miscarriage or abortion:

  • You may start immediately — protection begins straight away.
Side Effects

Serious side effects (seek medical help immediately):

  • Blood clots (deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, stroke, or heart attack).
    • Symptoms include leg pain/swelling, chest pain, shortness of breath, coughing blood, severe headache, or vision/speech disturbances.
  • Allergic reactions (rash, swelling, difficulty breathing).
  • Liver problems (yellowing of the skin or eyes).

Common side effects:

  • Headache or migraine.
  • Nausea, vomiting, or abdominal discomfort.
  • Breast tenderness or enlargement.
  • Mood swings, depression, or decreased libido.
  • Irregular bleeding or spotting.

Uncommon or rare side effects:

  • Skin rash, hives, or chloasma (patchy skin discolouration).
  • Fluid retention, weight changes.
  • Contact lens intolerance.
  • Increased blood pressure.

Warnings

Do not take Femodene ED if you:

  • Are pregnant or allergic to any of its ingredients.
  • Have or have ever had blood clots, heart attack, stroke, breast or liver cancer, or unexplained vaginal bleeding.
  • Have severe liver disease or liver tumours.
  • Take certain Hepatitis C medicines (e.g. ombitasvir/paritaprevir/ritonavir).

Tell your doctor before using if you:

  • Smoke, are overweight, or are over 35 years old.
  • Have diabetes, high blood pressure, migraines, epilepsy, or kidney/heart disease.
  • Have gallstones, varicose veins, lupus, or porphyria.
  • Have or have had angioedema or chloasma.

Additional information:

  • Slightly increases the risk of blood clots, breast cancer, and cervical cancer, but lowers the risk of ovarian and endometrial cancer.
  • Does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs) — use condoms for protection.
  • Some medicines and herbal remedies (e.g. St John’s Wort, rifampicin, carbamazepine) can reduce effectiveness.
