Description

Cilique is a combined oral contraceptive pill containing two hormones: norgestimate (a progestogen) and ethinylestradiol (an oestrogen). It prevents pregnancy primarily by stopping ovulation, thickening cervical mucus to make it harder for sperm to reach an egg, and changing the lining of the uterus to prevent implantation.

When taken correctly, Cilique is highly effective at preventing pregnancy.

Directions for Use
  • Take one tablet daily at the same time each day, with or without food.
  • Each pack contains 21 tablets — take one every day for 21 days, then have a 7-day break (during which you may experience a withdrawal bleed).
  • Start your next pack after the 7-day break, even if bleeding has not stopped.

Starting Cilique:

  • If you start on Day 1 of your period, you are protected immediately.
  • If you start between Days 2–5, use extra contraception (e.g. condoms) for the first 7 days.

If you forget a tablet:

  • If less than 12 hours late, take it as soon as you remember and continue as normal.
  • If more than 12 hours late, take the last missed pill as soon as possible and continue as usual, but use extra contraception for 7 days.
  • If the missed pill is in the third week, skip the 7-day break and start the next pack immediately.

Vomiting or severe diarrhoea within 3–4 hours after taking a pill may reduce protection — take another tablet as soon as possible and use extra contraception for 7 days.

After childbirth:
If not breastfeeding, start 21 days after delivery. If breastfeeding, discuss alternative contraception with your healthcare provider.

Side Effects

Serious side effects (seek medical help immediately):

  • Signs of a blood clot (deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism): pain or swelling in one leg, sudden shortness of breath, chest pain, or coughing up blood.
  • Stroke symptoms: severe headache, blurred vision, slurred speech, weakness, or fainting.
  • Heart attack symptoms: chest pain radiating to the arm or neck.
  • Liver problems: yellowing of skin or eyes (jaundice).
  • Allergic reactions: swelling of face, lips, tongue or throat, difficulty breathing.

Common side effects:

  • Headache, migraine.
  • Nausea, stomach discomfort.
  • Breast tenderness, pain, or enlargement.
  • Weight changes, mood swings, or mild depression.
  • Irregular bleeding or spotting.
  • Fluid retention or bloating.

Uncommon or rare side effects:

  • Skin rash or itching (including chloasma – patchy skin discolouration).
  • Decreased libido or mood changes.
  • Increased blood pressure.
  • Contact lens intolerance.

Warnings

Do not take Cilique if you:

  • Are pregnant or allergic to any ingredients.
  • Have or have ever had blood clots, stroke, heart attack, angina, or breast/liver cancer.
  • Have unexplained vaginal bleeding.
  • Have severe liver disease or liver tumours.
  • Take Hepatitis C medicines containing ombitasvir/paritaprevir/ritonavir.

Tell your doctor before using Cilique if you:

  • Smoke, are overweight, or are over 35 years old.
  • Have diabetes, high blood pressure, migraines, depression, epilepsy, kidney or heart problems.
  • Have gallstones, varicose veins, or family history of blood clots.
  • Have lupus, porphyria, or angioedema.
  • Have or had conditions that worsen during pregnancy (e.g. chloasma).

Additional advice:

  • Cilique slightly increases the risk of blood clots, breast cancer, and cervical cancer, but reduces risk of ovarian and endometrial cancer.
  • Does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs) — use condoms for protection.
  • Some medicines and herbal remedies (e.g. St John’s Wort, rifampicin, carbamazepine) can reduce its effectiveness.

What should I do if I miss a pill?

Can I get pregnant after stopping Cilique?
Yes. Fertility usually returns quickly after stopping the pill.

Can I use Cilique after having a baby?
If not breastfeeding, start 21 days after childbirth; if breastfeeding, consult your doctor for alternatives.
