Description

Wegovy is a weight loss and weight management medication containing the active ingredient semaglutide, which mimics the hormone GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1). This hormone works on brain receptors that regulate appetite, helping users feel fuller, less hungry, and experience reduced food cravings.

Wegovy is administered as a weekly injection in a pre-filled pen and is intended for use alongside a reduced-calorie meal plan and increased physical activity. It is recommended for:

  • Adults with a BMI of 30 kg/m² or more (obesity).
  • Adults with a BMI of 27–29.9 kg/m² (overweight) who have weight-related health conditions.
Directions for Use

Dosage:

  • Start with a low dose of 0.25 mg weekly, gradually increasing over 16 weeks to the maintenance dose of 2.4 mg once weekly.
  • The escalation schedule is as follows:
    1. Week 1–4: 0.25 mg
    2. Week 5–8: 0.5 mg
    3. Week 9–12: 1 mg
    4. Week 13–16: 1.7 mg
    5. From Week 17: 2.4 mg
  • Adolescents follow the same escalation but should stop if they fail to lose 5% of their BMI after 12 weeks on the maximum tolerated dose.

Administration:

  • Inject under the skin (subcutaneous) in the upper arm, stomach, or upper leg.
  • Use a new needle for each injection and do not mix Wegovy with other injectable medicines.

Missed Dose:

  • If less than 5 days have passed since the missed dose, administer it as soon as remembered and continue the weekly schedule.
  • If more than 5 days have passed, skip the missed dose and resume the regular schedule.

Storage:

  • Keep in the refrigerator (2–8°C) and avoid freezing.
  • After opening, Wegovy can be stored below 30°C for up to 6 weeks.
Side Effects

Very Common (may affect more than 1 in 10 people):

  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation.
  • Headache, stomach pain, fatigue.

Common (may affect up to 1 in 10 people):

  • Dizziness, bloating, flatulence, heartburn, indigestion.
  • Hair loss, gallstones, injection site reactions.
  • Low blood sugar (especially in diabetic patients).

Uncommon (may affect up to 1 in 100 people):

  • Fast heartbeat, delayed stomach emptying.
  • Inflamed pancreas (acute pancreatitis).

Warning Signs:

  • Severe stomach pain (potential pancreatitis).
  • Vision changes in diabetic patients.
  • Symptoms of low blood sugar: cold sweat, dizziness, or fast heartbeat.
Warnings

Do Not Use If:

  • You are allergic to semaglutide or its ingredients.
  • You are pregnant, planning to conceive, or breastfeeding.

Cautions:

  • Wegovy is not a substitute for insulin in diabetes.
  • Fast weight loss may worsen diabetic eye disease (retinopathy).
  • Inform your doctor about all medications to avoid interactions.

Additional Notes:

  • Use contraception while on Wegovy and stop 2 months before attempting pregnancy.
  • Wegovy is not suitable for children under 12 years of age.
