Why exercise is important

Exercise is not just about burning calories - it plays a key role in protecting your overall health during weight loss. In the major studies of Wegovy® and Mounjaro®, all patients were encouraged to increase their activity. This combination of medicine plus exercise produced stronger results than medicine alone. Regular movement helps maintain muscle, supports heart health, and makes it easier to keep weight off in the long term.

What kind of activity helps

  • Aerobic exercise: Activities such as brisk walking, cycling, swimming, or jogging strengthen the heart and lungs. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate activity per week (about 30 minutes on most days). If you are new to exercise, even 10–15 minutes a day is a good starting point - you can gradually build up over time.

Preserving muscle keeps your metabolism healthy and supports strength and balance. Aim for 2–3 sessions per week.
  • Everyday movement: Small changes add up: taking the stairs, getting off the bus one stop early, or doing short walks after meals. Even light activities like gardening, housework, or playing with children help increase daily energy use and reduce long periods of sitting.
  • Flexibility and balance: Gentle stretching, yoga, or Pilates can improve posture, reduce aches, and lower the risk of injury. This is particularly useful if you are carrying extra weight or starting exercise after a break.
